Magazine Redesign & Poster

This magazine project involved redesigning a magazine of our choice. In my case, it was the Road & Track magazine which had a somewhat dated look. My intention with the redesign was to make the magazine appeal to a more professional audience.

The redesign, as seen as in image two and beyond, made more use of images across spreads. That was an aspect that made the page much more engaging, and so it was used in multiple areas. Headings and subheadings were in a sans-serif font as to avoid distraction from the image. However, for the sake of readability, a serif font known as ‘Optima’ was chosen for body text (which is generally easier to read in print format). Image five to me really speaks of how a striking photo can make the page come to life.

The last item, image eight, was a poster created from a real-life event. In this case, the Edible Vancouver event highlighted two things – cycling and food, and so both were incorporated in visually important areas of the poster. Salmon and assorted vegetables/fruits were chosen based on the fact that the Fraser Valley has a few salmon fishing operations and many farms that grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. Again, the image is really what makes this poster come to life. Body text was strategically placed in areas that are not cluttered so that the information remains clear, while not becoming distracting. Both the magazine and poster designs were created with Adobe InDesign CS5.
