I worked at the Heights Merchants’ Association BIA (HMA) in the summer of 2012 on a co-op term. Below is a brief selection of work:

Street Banner, Business Card & Overpass Banner

My time at the HMA involved a fair amount of design work. The image seen above actually ended up being used for their street banners along Hastings Street for 11 blocks (between Boundary Rd. and Gamma Ave.). The original artwork is not mine, but I was responsible for modifying the colour palette to make the swinging girl stand out more (the area’s trademark icon) on the banners. This was done by using a more royal blue, using a shade from the HMA logo, and lightening the yellow/pink stars and ‘Heights’ text.

Also visible in this set on image two and three is a redo of the Association’s business cards. The cards emphasize the primary brand colour of the Association, and the website (which was newly redesigned at the time). It also uses symbols from the brand, adding to the vibrancy, and social media profiles. The more obvious visual hierarchy also enhances the user experience.

Finally, the last two images were from the annual event that attracts over 50,000 visitors known as Hats Off Day. I was not responsible for the artwork, but I did adapt it to an overpass banner that was posted on Canada Way in Burnaby, as well as for a special flyer (cover visible) that was inserted in the Burnaby Now newspaper (with a circulation of approximately 95,000).
